Itzel  professional practice focuses on Competition & Antitrust, Customs Law and International Trade.

Prior to joining SMPS Legal, Itzel Ríos worked for 7 years in the Mexican Federal Economic Competition Commission’s Merger Division, analyzing numerous pre-merger notification procedures in different industries, including real estate, pharmaceutical, mining, digital platforms, insurance and bonds, and automotive.

Itzel  was formerly part of the legal team of the Decentralized Legal Administration of the Tax Administration Service (SAT) of the Mexican Tax Administration Service (SAT), where she analyzed and handled administrative revocation appeals on customs and tax law and defended the Tax authority’s administrative acts on customs and tax matters in the Federal Court of Administrative Justice on the same matters.

Itzel holds a Law Degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and a Post Graduate Degree in Tax Law from the same university. She also holds a diploma in economics from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and has taken different courses related to antitrust, legal argumentation and access to public information.
