SMPS LEGAL strengthens its International Trade and Competition & Antitrust practices in Mexico with a new partner, Fernanda Garza Magdaleno

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO, March 1st, 2023 – SMPS Legal is pleased to announce that Fernanda Garza has joined the Firm as partner and head of the practices of Competition & Antitrust Law and International Trade as of March 1st, 2023, with the purpose of boosting SMPS Legal’s growth and range of services internationally and locally.

This strategic move is aligned with our Firm’s vision, as we keep on amplifying our services and benefits to our clients, and it came after the recent integration of the Compliance partner José Gerardo Vázquez.

Fernanda has a broad background in the Antitrust practice, combining her perspective as an official of the Mexican competition authority and as a private practitioner representing national and international companies. Her expertise covers all aspects of antitrust, including merger notifications, immunity requests, investigations and proceedings followed in the form of trial on absolute and relative monopolistic practices, proceedings on barriers to competition and essential inputs handled by the Federal Antitrust Commission (COFECE) and the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT), as well as litigation before constitutional courts (juicio de amparo) against resolutions issued by the competition authorities.

In the practice of International Trade, Fernanda has a unique command and vision given her national and international experience in the field. Her experience includes advising national and international clients on customs law and foreign trade consulting, export and manufacturing promotion programs and the application of international agreements. She also has experience in litigation before administrative authorities and the judicial courts, as well as in the dispute resolution mechanisms of the international treaties to which Mexico is a party, the World Trade Organization (WTO) system and procedures on unfair trade practices.

In connection with Fernanda Garza’s incorporation, Jorge San Martin, managing partner of SMPS Legal, stated that this was an important decision on a board management level. “We are glad to add such a talented female practitioner heading our Competition & Antitrust and International Trade practices, since she has a mastery of these practices from a domestic, regional and international perspective”.

Eduardo Pizarro Suárez, heading the corporate and transactional practice area of the Firm in Mexico, pointed out that “With the incorporation of Fernanda Garza, we increase the visibility of SMPS Legal both locally and internationally, and we strengthened two important practices within the firm that will provide more benefits to our clients and prospects”.

Fernanda Garza commented that she is very motivated and glad to join a Firm of the level of SMPS Legal and that she assumes, with great pleasure, the mission of positioning SMPS Legal as a leading Firm in the Antitrust and International Trade practices. She also notes that she is very happy to take on this challenge not only for what it implies in her professional career but also for the opportunity to work in a culture of equity, inclusion, responsibility, excellence, fellowship, and sense of duty.
