Foreign Trade and Customs

SMPS Legal’s foreign trade and customs practice area focuses not only on advising our clients on compliance with trade- and customs-related obligations, but also on helping them to identify and develop areas of opportunity in order to expand their businesses by taking advantage of legal and administrative instruments that the Mexican authorities have established as a result of the economic opening up of our country.

We specialize in advising our clients on how to expand beyond existing borders.

We have assembled a team of specialists in foreign-trade and customs legislation, harmonized-tariff classification, the valuation of goods, implementation of the provisions of various free-trade trade agreements signed by Mexico, requests to different authorities to confirm criteria, promotion and development programs such as “maquila”-drawback and sectoral promotion programs and import-tax refunds, among other things.

Our team has extensive experience of conducting internal audits of customs procedures, in order to confirm that legal mandates and formalities have been duly complied with in import and export operations, as well of providing specialized advice on regulatory and administrative matters.

Likewise, we represent our clients before customs authorities, in audits, origin reviews and other administrative procedures, and also in challenging the rulings or tax credits stemming from the said procedures.

Our multidisciplinary services provide certainty to companies that want to take advantage of the opportunities offered by transnational agreements.

We have an extensive base of Mexican and foreign clients from a variety of sectors such as chemicals, clothing, minerals, commodities, finance, shipping, alcohol and beverages, aeronautics, retail, energy and manufacturing.
